Welcome to OneOneTwo Cameron Street

Renovating this house has felt much like many of the projects I’ve taken on before: first finding a property, then waiting for those initial feelings… noticing what good bones it has and imagining its potential. When we first visited Cameron Street, I was immediately smitten with its charm and how well-built she was.

I’ve come to truly appreciate the age of the property and the integrity of both the architect and the builder. Visitors are always amazed that she never creaks or groans; she’s solid and beautifully built. The architraves still give me chills… the detail, the craftsmanship, and knowing that this was architect Billy Thomas’s own home makes it even more special.

Apparently, Billy was never much of a kitchen lover, often tucking them away in the darker corners of a house. Times have changed, of course, but this layout has actually suited my plans perfectly. It allows for both comfortable accommodation and on-site catering, with the kitchen thoughtfully separate from the dining and living spaces.

I couldn’t have furnished the house without the beautiful antique pieces from my wonderful late mother- and father-in-law. These treasures are so close to my heart, and having them here makes the space feel even more meaningful. I know they would have loved seeing their furniture on another journey, and that brings me such joy. Mixing their pieces with finds from my other great love, op-shopping, is just bliss! Finding that book, or that egg cup… each item has a story, deserves another life, and brings simple, lasting happiness.

Not long after taking over the house, I visited the Ashburton Gallery and Museum and delved into Billy Thomas’s work. I selected twelve of his blueprints and had them framed, now proudly displayed for all to enjoy. Sadly, we’re still searching for the blueprint of Billy’s own home, OneOneTwo Cameron Street. Maybe one day we’ll find it?
